How to Crochet a Heart Granny Square Pouch: A Revamped Project I Finally Love

A few years ago, I scribbled down a pattern for a heart granny square pouch. It was one of those projects that seemed like a great idea at the time, but when I finished it, I wasn’t entirely happy with the heart shape. It felt a little off—like it didn’t quite capture the charm I was going for. So, I tucked the pattern away in my craft drawer and moved on to other things.

Fast forward to this year, and I stumbled across that old pattern while organizing my yarn stash. I decided to give it another shot, tweaking the design to better match my vision. And you know what? I absolutely love how it turned out! It’s now one of my favorite crochet projects—affordable, accessible, and perfect for gifting or keeping for yourself.

If you’re looking for a fun and functional crochet project, this heart granny square pouch is it. Let me walk you through the process and share why this revamped design has stolen my heart (pun intended).

How to Crochet the Heart Granny Square Pouch

Step 1: We’re going to start with the heart

The heart granny square is the star of this project. Here’s how I tweaked the design to get the perfect shape:

Round 1: In a MC: ch2, 3 TR, 4 DC, 2 TR, 4DC, 3TR, ch 2 then SS into the MC (20 (counting the chains as well. we'll work on those in the next round)

Don’t cut the pink yarn just yet—bring it to the front, as we’ll use it later to work into the front loops of this round. Now, Let's make the circle around the heart. All stitches in this row are worked in the back loop for a cleaner look. ( change to white color)

Round 2: Join to the first chain with a standing single crochet, Dc into the 1st ch of the previous row, hdc in the 2nd ch of the previous row. Sc in each of the TR of the previous row. Hdc, hdcinc , hdc, hdcinc ( in the four DC of the previous row ). Sc in each of the TR of the bottom of the heart. hdcinc , hdc, hdcinc , hdc, sc, sc, sc, hdc, dc. SS into the first DC of this round . (24)

Continue working with the white yarn. This is an increase  row for the circle. 1 DC in one stitch then 2 DC in the next and repeat all round.

Round 3: Ch 2 and DC into the same stitch, 2 dc in the next stitch * dc, 2 dc* repeat till the end of the row and SS into the first dc. (36)

In this row we will start making the corners and the shape of the square.

Round 4:

  1. Chain 1, then single crochet (sc) in the next 2 stitches.
  2. Repeat the following sequence 3 times to create the sides and corners of your square:
    • Half double crochet (hdc) in the next 2 stitches.
    • Two Double crochet  (2 dc) in the next stitch.
    • Chain 2 (this forms the corner).
    • Two Double crochet (2 dc) in the next stitch.
    • Half double crochet (hdc) in the next 2 stitches.
    • Single crochet (sc) in the next 3 stitches.
  3. For the final side and corner, repeat this sequence 1 time:
    • Half double crochet (hdc) in the next 2 stitches.
    • Two Double crochet (2 dc) in the next stitch.
    • Chain 2 (this forms the corner).
    • Two Double crochet (2 dc) in the next stitch.
    • Half double crochet (hdc) in the next 2 stitches.
    • Single crochet (sc) in the next 2 stitches.
    • slst in the first dc to join (48)
  4. cut off yarn and weave in ends

Now we will go back to the front loops in round 1 using the yarn we left at the front to work the rest of the heart:

Round 2 (heart) : Sc in each of the chain one stitches then sc inc around.

If your Squares look weird( Like mine!!} , it's ok you can steam block it to fix that!

Step 2: The back Granny Square

It's basically the same pattern without the color change and working in the back loop.

start with a magic circle using the pouch color (white)

Round 1: 12 DC in mc slst in first dc to join (12)
Round 2: ch 2, [2 dc]x12 slst in first dc(not the ch2) to join (24)
Round 3: ch2, [dc, 2 dc]x12 slst in first dc to join (36)
Round 4: ch 2, [2 dc, chain 2, 2 dc in the next stitch ( this makes the corner) , hdc, hdc, sc, sc, sc, hdc, hdc]x4 slst in the first dc to join (48)

cut off yarn and weave in ends. The back square is done

Step 3: Join the Squares

With the wrong sides facing each other, use red yarn to single crochet the squares together along three sides. use three sc on the corner and Leave the top edge open to form the pouch’s opening.

To give the pouch a polished look, add a simple single crochet border around the top edge. This also reinforces the opening.

Step 4: Crocheting the top edge

Continuing to work in the rounds and joining after each one, begin by joining with the flower color in any stitch.

Round 1: ch 2 and work front post double crochet (FPdc) and back post double crochet (BPdc) stitches all around. Finally, join with the first FPdc stitch to complete the round.

This creates the opening for threading the band through for your pouch.

Round 2:  ch1, slst in the first stitch,  (hdc, 2dc, hdc) in the next stitch, slst in the next stitch. Continue repeating this pattern until you reach the end of the round, then slip stitch to the first ch 1 to join.

Step 5: Crocheting band with the leaf

using pink yarn chain as many as you would like your string length to be then cut of yarn and weave in ends. thread it through the front post double crochet and back post double crochet

Why This Project Works So Well

What I love most about this revamped design is how the heart shape finally looks just right. By adjusting the increases and playing with color placement, the heart pops in a way it didn’t before. Plus, the granny square construction makes it quick to work up—perfect for last-minute gifts or a relaxing afternoon project.

Using acrylic yarn keeps the project affordable and durable, so you don’t have to worry about it losing its shape over time. And because it’s machine washable, it’s practical for everyday use.

Tips for Personalizing Your Pouch

  • Experiment with Colors: Try pastels for a soft look or bold hues for a colorful vibes.
  • Add Embellishments: Sew on beads, embroidery, or tassels for extra flair.
  • Change the Size: Use a larger hook and thicker yarn for a bigger pouch, or go smaller for a delicate clutch.
